Improving Your Putting Rhythm with TempoStik+

Understanding Rhythm in the Putting Stroke

When we talk about putting rhythm, weโ€™re referring to the ratio between your backswing time and your downswing time. For example, the average rhythm on the PGA Tour is a 660-millisecond backswing and a 330-millisecond downswing, giving a 2:1 ratio. This means the backswing is twice as long as the downswing to impact. Maintaining a consistent rhythm like this is crucial for a reliable putting stroke.

The Importance of Consistency

Itโ€™s essential to maintain the same rhythm across all types of putts. Consistent rhythm is closely tied to consistent timing, and both are key to good putting. To help you with this, the TempoStik+ provides a visual and auditory guide, allowing you to lock in that rhythm.

Getting Started with TempoStik+

When you first open the TempoStik+ app, I recommend starting with the default settings. These include the default rhythm and downswing tempo. Itโ€™s important that the tempo feels natural to you. As you start to hit a few putts, you might find that the default tempo feels too fast or too slow. If thatโ€™s the case, you can adjust the core tempo to better match your personal stroke but try to keep the rhythm close to the default 2:1 ratio.

From my experience, if your rhythm strays too far from this ratioโ€”either too high or too lowโ€”it can become difficult to consistently control your downswing time and, more importantly, the rate of acceleration during your stroke.

Fine-Tuning Your Rhythm

Once youโ€™ve practiced with the default settings, you can begin to make small adjustments to better match your personal feel. For instance, if the backswing feels too fast, you could increase the ratio slightly, perhaps to 2.2 or 2.3. If it feels too slow, you might reduce the ratio to something closer to 1.9 or 1.8 however, try to stay as close to the default settings as possible unless you find them particularly unsuitable for your natural stroke.

Practicing with TempoStik+

As you start to identify and practice your rhythm with TempoStik+, itโ€™s beneficial to test it on putts of different lengths. This is crucial because golfers often lose control of their rhythm and tempo on varying putt distances. Changes in timing or swing length can disrupt your rhythm, leading to inconsistencies in your putting.

By focusing on maintaining a consistent rhythm, youโ€™ll naturally improve your timing and ensure that your swing length matches the length of the putt. Rhythm is a vital part of speed control and is closely linked to timing and stroke length. By identifying and training your rhythm with TempoStik+, youโ€™ll see significant improvements in your speed control, resulting in fewer three-putts and more holed putts.

Conclusion

Using TempoStik+ to fine tune your rhythm will help you achieve better speed control on the greens. By sticking close to the default rhythm settings and adjusting as needed, youโ€™ll be on your way to more consistent and successful putting.
